WEEK 27

Showreel Planning Pt. 2

I was inspired by a showreel I came across on Behance (refer below). It is simple yet effective in conveying the technical skills of the creator to the viewer.

With only a month left until submission (along with other assignments), I needed to find a way to make a showreel without using After Effects. This is because animating UI content in After Effects requires recreating wireframes from scratch, which is tedious and time-consuming. Fortunately, I found a platform called Jitter. It has a built-in Figma plugin that allows for a seamless transfer of designs and offers a good range of animation features. Although the free version is limited to a 720p export, it saves me a lot of time. Plus, I can always pay for the Pro version for about £14 and cancel the subscription afterwards. Not only that, learning how to use this platform is beneficial when creating moving prototypes when presenting to stakeholders or clients, as they can see how one's product functions upon deployment.

Look how smooth the animations are on these two wireframes!

The background music is very important in determining the mood and creative direction of the video. To reflect the playful yet composed nature of my job hunt journey, I have decided on the following genres: Funky, Cinematic, and Electronic.

I looked online for some royalty-free music and found these two platforms, but both of them have downsides to them:
  1. Artlist.io - required payment for unwatermarked download
  2. Epidemic Sound - required payment for download
Not wanting to spend more money, I turned to YouTube and continued my search. I found a playlist by Epidemic Funk and listened to each song until this one called Spring Gang - Mama Funk spoke to me. I enjoyed how it was very upbeat and had a distinct bass that could work well with transitions

Here are more sample videos of design showreels I have found on YouTube that I find quite captivating, and represented the soundtrack very well.

Animating the Showreel
In Figma, I created a high-fidelity storyboard of the showreel, so I have a clear idea of what I am going to make. I began by figuring out the copy, then proceeded with producing a few versions of the text layout until I ended up with 1-2 that I liked. When that was completed, I experimented with the types of gradients as the background and eventually landed on a linear one.

Shortlisted Frames

As I was animating the selected frames, I changed my mind about the text layout for the title, so I went back to my Figma file and re-imported it to Jitter. Next, I downloaded the soundtrack from YouTube by using a website to convert the link to an MP3 file. An hour later, I felt that adding sound effects before the soundtrack was necessary because I wanted to create a moment of suspense. This is the link to the "Ping" Sound Effect: https://freesound.org/s/785353/which feels ideal for the corporate eyes.
