WEEK 24 Part 2
Degree Show Planning
20/3/26I went to the studio (A238) again for some testing and for a tutorial with Mafalda. I took a few notes on the adjustments that needed to be made below: - Make the horizontal wooden pole adjustable (currently being screwed in), and make it longer
- Figure out the maximum resolution of the short-throw projector and buy a net curtain accordingly, because right now, it is not wide enough
- See if the net curtain/screen can be extended lengthwise (depends on the projector aspect ratio)
- USB 3.0 extension cable does not work with the Kinect because data travels more slowly, so try with a different Kinect or restart the computer with the wire attached
- To get the image to be projected from floor to ceiling, the projector has to be far away from the net curtain
- Kinect needs to be positioned at hip level and not at a bird's eye view, so the body is projected proportionately (a tall tripod would work well)
- Mafalda suggested having two Kinects for the installation - one for my performance and one for the audience's interactivity
- Soft lighting will be used for facial illumination, maintaining visibility through the net curtain for the audience
- SHARP Installation Projector - NEC PA522U vs CASIO Short Throw Projector - XJ UT310WN
To project work onto a net curtain using a projector, I would need to connect a WindowCOMP to the OutTOP and adjust the following settings (refer to the image below). The resolution format for WindowCOMP is 1690 x 1200 and an aspect ratio of 16:10. After that, click on the "Perform" button under the Open as Perform Window feature.

Revising the Layout
From the test on Tuesday, the current layout is using a short-throw projector with a short distance between the Kinect sensor and the screen/net curtain. After some trial and error, I found that it would be better to use the regular projector, which has a better resolution and higher coverage and expand the distance to allow more space for my dance, which is essentially projecting the images from behind, and I would perform in front of the screen, eliminating the chances of shadows. I followed this tutorial to convert my pre-recorded dance video into particles.
