Brand Identity

I stumbled upon this YouTube video while researching brand identity, and it is useful as a reference for visual and strategic storytelling.

I was brainstorming ideas for a logo when I had this thought of asking Google Gemini, "What kind of design traits should a logo have to represent boldness or empathy? " This was the answer it gave me:

Some of the elements I plan to experiment with:
  • Hand-drawn logo
  • different weight of strokes
  • negative space
  • rough texture
I was grappling with two options: using my initials (SY) or choosing an object that represents my personality traits and what I want my future clients/ employers to associate my work with. I could not think of an object, so I went with the first choice.

As always, Pinterest has some of the best design examples, so I created a quick moodboard consisting of a few logos that stood out to me.

After an hour, I wasn't getting anywhere near a draft that I liked, so I shifted over to my tablet instead, as I would have greater control over the minor details. Besides, going back to the traditional-ish way of brainstorming, e.g. sketching, is sometimes the way to go. During that process, I managed to figure out a direction that I gravitate towards, which I have circled in blue. The specific letterforms in that sketch featured elongated tails and a low x-height, which provided the typeface with its unique character.

To evaluate its visual impact, I placed the logo in situ within my portfolio website to see how it functioned in a real-world digital environment. Looking at them side-by-side, I prefer the one on the bottom left, without the T.
