WEEK 2
Takeaways from Class
| Slides On All The Assignments |
Steve briefed the class on how our degree project in terms of methods of assessment, deadlines and project planning. I initially questioned the need for assignment 1, as that would defeat the purpose of having tutorial sessions. Steve then explained that it was more of a progress check, especially for the students who do not have a concrete idea yet. I should absolutely start on my project prospectus right now and get approval as soon as possible.
Answers:
- What areas of digital media excite you?
The area of Digital Services excites me. Whatever that is done electronically with the smallest human involvement. I am particularly interested in creating a digital space that prioritises customer needs whilst still satisfying business's goals. It has to simplistic yet intuitive. One of the ways that can be achieved in through tons of research and testing which is also my area of interest. Design need not be loud to be great. As the famous quote reads,
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Airman's Odyssey
Hot take but I don't particularly understand why being the largest tech giant in the world automatically gives you that credibility when it comes to design. Yes, I'm talking about the Apple Inc. However, I do have to admit that in the early days of the Apple establishment, Jony Ive - lead designer at the time, had created some of the best design philosophies that designers use till this day.
Besides that, I also enjoy film-making. Filmmakers have the power to alter a storyline by simply playing around with the angles, composition or even color grading or switching the order of clips in post-production. Nowadays, films are cropped to fit phone screens and uploaded on social media becoming what we know today as, "Reels". Even so, it is prevalent that the impact of films are significant in shaping one's perception about something.
- After you graduate, in what sort of media industry would you like to work in?
I would love to be absorbed into the world of product design leaning more towards the digital channels. During my placement, I had the opportunity to work in the web team where I got to be involved in the strategic planning of feature enhancements, team alignment calls all the way to web launches. I've also collaborated with teams from other departments including sales and partner enablement and developer platforms where I did projects outside of my job scope. From there, I was able to identify my likes and dislikes.
- What sorts of projects will demonstrate your strengths and talents?
Projects that call for discovering user pain points (being observant and having the ability to decode human behaviour), market review, and keen eye for detail especially when it comes to applying design principles.
- What sorts of projects are going to positively challenge you?
Projects revolving around areas I am not familiar with such as game design, and animation. However, the degree project isn't a place where I will challenge myself by experimenting with a different playing field. I'd rather stick to what I know best and find other ways to push my boundaries. Creating a digital service requires alot of user input. Perhaps I could gather feedback by interviewing groups of people outside of university. That could provide a chance to hone my confidence and communication skills.
- What sort of (realistic) digital skills will I need to learn and develop?
Even though a UI/UX project doesn't require much software development skills, It would be beneficial to familiarise myself with front-end coding or basic programming involving Arduino as that could expand the perimeters of my project.
- How could my project use interactive or coded, or imaging elements? Or moving image productions, how will it be shown and seen?
Perhaps, I could create clickable prototypes in Figma with micro-interactions such as adding hover states, loading animations, and transition effects. I could also build interactive navigation flows that users can actually click through.
