WEEK 28
Today, I began working on my logo. I went onto YouTube and researched how to create a meaningful logo design. But first...
The 3 Rules of Good Logo Design
What constitutes a good logo design?- Appropriate – logos should be appropriate in their feelings.
- Distinctive & Memorable – It has to be unusual enough to persist in our mind. It should pass the "doodle test."
- Simple – It needs to be able to be produced in every pixel size.

What constitutes a bad logo design?- generic
- complicated
- flat vector (my opinion)
Brainstorming App NamesSince my app's mascot is an oyster, I started developing names that are closely associated with the animal. Whenever a name came to mind, I would write it down in my list and do a quick Google search to see if it was taken by any company. It wasn't long before I finally came up with the name "Onica" which was a combination of the words, "Oyster" and "Virginica", both of which, have a significant relation to the concept of m app. For context, the word, oyster represents the app's mascot whereas the word, virginica derives from the scientific terminology for eastern oysters, "Crassotrea Virginica" which is mainly found in the New York Harbor.
Moodboard For LogoThe oyster illustrations caught my attention with their intricate details and fascinating topography. The outline of the oyster's shell and the squiggle lines representing its texture sparked my imagination. The organic curves and patterns evoked a sense of movement and depth despite its simplicity.
I also referenced the colors from the branding guideline of BOP as it is quite memorable and distinct, a sign of great design.Final Logo DesignUsing Adobe Illustrator, I used Image Trace for one of the reference images to get a rough shape and outline of an oyster. Then, I experimented with the design and reduced the number of rows on its surface. I also colored the design according to the branding and made it slightly slanted.
Version 1Version 1 is vertically straight with no wording at the bottom. I went for a more minimalist look.
Version 2This iteration has the brand name at the bottom because I thought it would look more professional that way. I ended up picking this design as the final logo.
Inspiration for the In-App GameI have compiled many sources that resembled the desired outcome of my app. For example, the playfulness of the UI design, the utilization of marker-based AR through scanning small cards, and a 3D model of a cross-section.
