WEEK 26
Deciding Between the Platforms to Use For AR
Unity & Vuforia- I have experience using the software
- can create a UI design
- there is a learning curve
Adobe Aero
- easier to learn because it is just importing the assets into the app
- cannot create UI Design using the software
Main Theme: Motion Poster
2 Sub Ideas:
1. Animating a 2D Paintings into 3D
- Use the Puppet Tool to animate the characters within the painting
- Make it look like a cut-out
- The purpose is to make museum visits and historical matters more interesting and immersive
2. Animating a 2D Poster About Mental Illness
- Pop-up artwork (have different layers)
- The subject moves through the artwork (telling a short story)
- The purpose is to gain insights into what the patients experience daily
- To educate people about mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, bipolar, and dementia. Have animations that depict what the patients experience daily.
- The main character of the animation could just be e.g a feather or a ball that goes through life
- Observe and play with human weight, movement, speed, feelings, and behaviors so that viewers can associate themselves with the object
Josh's Feedback
- Do it in Unity according to Josh, not Unreal based on Josh’s experience
- Do more research and see which platform suits you
- I could do an AR app based on making a poster come to life.
- The idea of making the poster move will not be boring because it all comes down to how the user interacts with AR.
- For example, you could make a poster of a dragon, and when the user scans the poster, the dragon will emerge and move toward the user.
- For example, another one would be playing with colors. Let's say you have a blue and yellow circle at opposite corners. When a user scans, they will be able to see the colors mixing.
Steve's Feedback
- Is AR the suitable medium for disseminating information regarding mental health? Or can it just be animation alone?
- Users do not need to watch the animation on the screens to educate themselves about the topic.
- The phone screen can sometimes turn out different than on laptop screens
- Use Unity instead of Unreal because Josh said so and he could also guide you on achieving your idea.
- We must take note that the animation about mental illness might trigger someone dealing with the same issue as well so be weary.
- Understanding the choice of AR to other mediums out there is crucial so that the core message is not lost in translation.
- Steve questions if this idea adds up to the 30 credits, it might be too little work
