This week, Dean gave us a lecture on the branding guidelines that we have to create for our app.

Week 5's Progress of App Assignment

This is a moodboard that contains a logo that uses Gestalt's Principle of Closure where the human eye perceives an image as complete even when certain elements are missing. I thought this concept was rather interesting and it fits the criteria of a good logo because it is simple yet effective and impactful.

Reference Images for Logo

After deciding on the rough concept of my logo, I went over to Adobe Illustrator and pasted all of my dog reference images. I particularly chose the dogs that looked pitiful and mostly photographed from the top.

Brainstorming Logo
Progress for Logo #1

Again, I experimented with the design principle mentioned earlier with a Dalmatian dog. After several attempts, I still wasn't satisfied with the outcome so I went for a different dog breed which was a French Bulldog. The reason was that as I googled dog breeds online, a few articles emphasized that the Frenchie is the most popular dog amongst the British.

Progress for Logo #2

I started off with basic shapes such as a triangle and began forming it into the facial expression of a bulldog. Initially, it looked like a Shih Tzu but as I added the face, the entire design transformed and it was starting to take shape. After a few iterations, I was happy with the general look of the logo.

Progress for Logo #3

Next, I placed a square behind the logo to see what it would look like as a thumbnail for a mobile app. I created a few versions and played around with various color palettes. Later, I could not decide which version is better so I headed over to my Instagram and posted a story asking my online friends for their feedback.

Feedback from Peers

All-in-all, 29 people had responded to my story and the most popular votes were Version 11 & 13 because it looked more like a dog adoption app.

Feedbacks

Dean's Feedback
  • Try to evoke emotions in the logo
  • Use the sad eyes to attract potential adopters
  • “Gruff” has a negative meaning because it is defined as rough and aggressive.
  • Change to Poochi because the people in the UK call their dog
  • Neomorphism: look up the term and try to apply it to the app
  • My logo is too complicated
  • The second idea with the hand on the head is that the dog looks like a fetus. Make it simpler.
  • Go to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and press inspect to see the website in the size of a phone. Observe the features and implement them into the app.
  • We need to finish the branding guidelines by this week.
  • Use cute pictures of dogs photographs and combine playful illustrations into the app

Peer's Feedback
  • If you choose a white background, people looking to adopt a pet at night are going to skip your app
  • General colors for the app could be brown, black, white, and grey (resembling a golden retriever & huskie)
