User Experience Design- Week 4's Class Task

Semester A: Week 1- Week 11
Student: Tai Ser Yeet (22064351)
Programme: BA(Hons) Digital Media Design
Task: Week 4's Class Task

Class Tasks

This week, we received feedback from Dean regarding our project. One of my peers, Neha brought up the issue of legislative works when it comes to adoption and it got me thinking about the necessity of it so I asked Dean about it. He suggested that I create a drop-down menu for it and either attach an empty body paragraph (lorem ipsum) or copy the terms & conditions from an existing animal shelter website. The name of my mobile application can't be the same as other apps in the market hence, it was definitely a struggle to find a name that was catchy and has not been used before. The presentation slides should be brief and text-heavy therefore sections such as the user personas are advised to be around 4 bullet points or less.

Followed Up Tasks

Week 4's Progress of App Assignment

Identifying the App's Most Viable Product (MVP)

This week, I analyzed a couple of case studies done by previous researchers regarding pet adoption including the step-by-step process to get to the completed product.  After doing market research on the user's concerns regarding the adoption process, I brainstormed a few solutions to each pain point listed using the Miro software. This ensures that I resolve each and every issue brought up by customers. I also added extra features that I think would be useful to integrate into the app, making the user experience more pleasant.

Part 1: Researching On Pet Adoption Apps

I used an app called Notion to organize all of my ideas each week. I have attached an example of my task execution in the app itself.

Survey Questions

For the quantitative research following questions were asked in a Google form, resulting in 14 responses (Flow, 2021):

  • Do you currently own a pet?

  • Would you prefer buying or adopting a pet?

  • What online service do you use to search for pets before contacting shelters?

  • Do all shelters provide a database of pets?

  • what factors do you look for while searching for a pet? (species, size, breed, temperament, gender, age, energy level, other)

  • Even if they do, how accurate or updated is the info provided on the website or app?

  • Is there a clear brief given from the shelter’s end about the adoption process and the requirements of the customers?

  • Is there a good amount of support provided after the adoption?

  • From 0 to 10 how hectic or easy do you think the adoption process currently is? (0= easy, 10= hectic)

  • Do shelters provide a long-term history of the pets? (Medical documents, previous ownership, experience history)

Card Sorting

I researched more on how to conduct card sorting and the benefits of it. A screenshot of a paragraph from a useful article is attached below.

From what I have gathered, the article states that you get to see how each user thinks. E.g when they wish to find their personal details of the account, he/she will try to find it in a specific category such as under “Account”. You can see if the terms might be hard for them to understand and later change them to a simpler one.

I could also insert a few screening questions such as, "Have you adopted a pet from an animal shelter?"

Notes From Article

  • less than 40 cards
  • recruit experienced & inexperienced candidates for card sorting
  • moderated (can jot down their thought process behind their action, ask them questions/ unmoderated (quicker, less interference)
  • normally lasts for 60 minutes
  • conduct practice session with someone before inviting participants

Dean’s Feedback
  • Remember to add the legal paragraphs in your app but make them hidden
  • No white background for the app cuz boring
  • Survey questions can be copied from the internet
  • User persona does not have to be so detailed, it could just be in-point form

      Potential Features of the App

      Navigation Bar

      • Home page (Enquiry form button)
      • Favorites/ Likes
      • Search bar (Filter system- species, size, breed, temperament, gender, age, energy level)
      • Donate
      • In-app chats/ phone calls

      Other features

      • Insert link to social media, email
      • Take a quiz! Find out what pet suits you best!

      Additional Reading

I also gained more insights into the market by reading people's case studies online and annotating my own screenshot of a specific paragraph that I found useful.

      Creating a User Persona

Next, I developed two user personas that would be eager to use my app using ChatGPT and modified a few details after that.

      User Journey Map

Using Canva, I created a user journey map for Cassandra which shows her journey from planning to get a dog to taking the pet home. Within the map, we are also able to understand her actions, objectives, thoughts, and possible ideas that contributed to her successful adoption story.
