This week, I presented slides on my chosen application about Wise, a money services provider that offers many services, such as loans, savings, and interest accounts. Wise also specializes in holding and converting foreign currencies and sending international bank transfers. (Wise, 2023) During the presentation, I touched on the many reasons I believe Wise is a good mobile application in terms of UI/UX and in relation to other applications in the market.
Below are the notes I wrote in today's lecture by Dean.
Lecture notes
General Notes
- Every function needs to be necessary. Too much will be overwhelming.
- Design according to the screen size (e.g tablet, phone, laptop)
- People want to review their data after they have filled it in (e.g you wanna recheck your personal details so u press the back button but they terminate your data. That is bad.)
- The less the user has to read, the better
- Think about how your app makes the user feel
- Personalisation, first impression is important
- Minimize user input (e.g add the ‘@’ when asking for the email address)
- 1920x 1080 Full HD, MP4, H264 1080p
Simple Business Case
- Think of how it works in the backend
- Think of whether you need to get people to run your app to keep it fresh and updated
Brand Guidelines
- Primary & secondary colors
- Need to put the hex code, RGB & CMYK in slides
- The logo has to be bold, simple, and direct & has to work in a square size
Design Principles
- Prioritize the most important content
- Intuitive navigation- an interface that works exactly as the user expects it to
- Consider the different needs of users (elderly, vision & hearing loss, colorblind, etc)
- Don't make users click too many buttons to get to their goals
- Simplicity is key
- Font size must be 16 pixels(11pt) on any screen
- Use san serif for screen
- Body text- lowercase only
- Primary typeface can be a bit complicated whereas secondary typeface for body text needs to be simple
- Fingertips are 8-10mm so be mindful
Followed Up Tasks
Referring to the Miro Board. my 3 favorite ideas from today were:
- Idea 4 - The purpose of the app idea revolves around the Billion Oyster Project and its initiative to restore oyster reefs at the New York Harbor. My idea is to create an event booking application that compiles all the water activity details as well as recruitment news to the users. They could even book their slots through the app and possibly collect points to win an achievement badge.
- Idea 6 - The purpose of the app idea is to simplify the process of adopting a dog and solve the many issues faced by adopters such as experiencing difficulty finding the most suitable pet for their lifestyle or it could be new adopters struggling to care for their new rescue dog due to the lack of guidance by the shelter.
- Idea 1- The purpose of this app idea is to be able to compare prices of items in British supermarkets by identifying each item with the barcode of each product.
Competitor Analysis
Idea 4's competitor- POINT
- Strengths: The app is useful when searching and signing up for open volunteering opportunities. It also constantly updates the users on events from various organizations.
- Weaknesses: POINT is not available in certain states in the US as well as in other countries. The app requires users to sign up before they can proceed to the main page.
Idea 6's competitor-
- Strengths: The app is very helpful in the sense that it takes the animals from an abundance of shelters and displays their characteristics and behaviors.
- Weaknesses: The app does not cross off the profiles of the pet that the user has viewed before, making the browsing rather repetitive. Besides that, the app does not work as good as the website hence, fewer users will download the app. Additionally, users do not receive responses from shelters after submitting inquiries on adopting a dog.
Idea 1's competitor- Trolley.co.uk
- Strengths: The Trolley app is fairly easy to set up and has good coverage of supermarkets and other shops such as Superdrug or Wilko. One of the features that people particularly enjoy is the notification option so they can see when offers start & finish.
- Weaknesses: Search results are not accurate after applying the price filter in the search bar. The email of price drops arrives way after the prices of supermarkets have been changed, causing users to miss the offer.
